  • Who Can Apply: Open to all students currently enrolled in Ontario high schools (Grades 9–12). Priority given to current MetroPrep students and students accepted for Fall 2025 enrollment.

Day 1

DNA & Lab Skills 101

  • Extract DNA from fruit using real lab reagents
  • Learn pipetting, aseptic technique & biosafety basics
  • Explore the structure and function of DNA

Day 2

PCR & Gel Electrophoresis

  • Amplify DNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
  • Separate and visualize DNA fragments using gels
  • Interpret banding patterns to draw scientific conclusions

Day 3

CRISPR in Action

  • Understand how CRISPR edits genes
  • Design your own guide RNA
  • Perform a simulated CRISPR experiment on the lacZ gene

Day 4

Bacterial Transformation

  • Insert plasmids into E. coli
  • Observe gene expression (e.g., fluorescence or antibiotic resistance)
  • Learn about applications in medicine & agriculture

Day 5

Showcase & Career Pathways

  • Complete a final project and lab presentation
